Tegheri Monastery

Mamakhatun, the wife of Prince Vache Vachutian, was the principle supporter of the construction of the Tegheri Monastery. The monastery gate alone exceeds the monastery in size; it took eleven years to build, and was completed in 1232.

Unfortunately, the monastery suffered considerable damage in 1948 as the result of an earthquake. Between 1950 and 1952, the domes of the church and its cinctures were renovated. Another restoration in 1975-76 had the objective of strengthening the eaves and restoring the tops of the monastery walls. Today, the Tegheri Monastery is a functioning convent, and a place of pilgrimage for the neighboring villagers.
