What Is Hookah?
A hookah is a traditional Middle Eastern or South
Asian device for smoking, which operates by
water-filtration and indirect heat. It can be used
for smoking many substances, such as tobacco, and
herbal fruits.
There are so many different names for this unique
smoking device. Some call it a hookah, hooka, shesha,
huka, nargile, narghile, shisha, shesha, sheesha,
nargila, or shishah. The HOOKAH (NARGILE as it is
known in the Middle East) has been the standard of
smoking for centuries in the middle east and
originated in Turkey over 500 years ago.
This unique smoking experience is rapidly growing in
popularity all over the world. Many people prefer
HOOKAH or HOOKA smoking to cigarettes and cigars
because of the smooth, flavorful, and cool taste of
the smoke.
Tobacco smoking is not what hookahs were
originally invented for as there are many examples
of hookahs in both art and archeology prior to the
arrival of tobacco in the Old World. In this
pre-tobacco period the most commonly smoked
substances in hookahs were opium and hashish
(although not marijuana). After the arrival of
tobacco in the Old World hookah use became more
widespread because of the lower level of
intoxication induced with tobacco smoking.
What
Is Shisha?
Tobacco mixed with fruit molasses and honey is used
when smoking out of a HOOKAH. Other names for this
include: tabac, tombak, tumbak, gouza, guza, moassel,
SHEESHA, etc. Specifically, the tobacco is a
grounded up mixture of dried fruit pulp, flavored
molasses, and fresh tobacco leaves. The SHISHA
tobacco (also known as SHEESHA) tobacco comes in a
variety of flavors including apple, apricot,
strawberry, capuccino, mint, cherry, grape, and the
list just goes on and on.
